At Marian Action, we’re celebrating our 50th anniversary this year, having organised the first social night for homeless in 1972 in a council hostel in Moncur St., at the Barras.
Eventually, we moved to organise these events in 9 of the council’s hostels, as well as the Talbot Centre, and the attendance at some of these events could be up to 80/90 people.
In time, we began to offer services such as shaving and haircutting, and organising Christmas and Easter parties. These hostels eventually closed, and we carried on with our social events at Aspire Housing in Partick, and Dalhousie Housing in Garnethill, before branching out into organising street work- a table in Byres Road, with tea, coffee, bags of food, aimed primarily at the homeless, but open to anyone who wants to stop for a chat – and also lunch events in St Peter’s Hall.
Our work at the moment consists mainly of these street events – attendance there varies, but can up to 20 people – and also the lunch events, which usually attract about 30 people. We are also hoping to restart our fortnightly social evenings in Dalhousie, which are usually attended by between 5 and 10 people. At present, we have 8 volunteers who help us regularly.
